There’s a common myth that beginners should stick solely to putters and midranges. Some so-called disc golf “gurus” claim you shouldn’t throw discs faster than your arm speed and that most players should cap it at speed 9. While this approach can help develop good form, if your main goal is fun, let’s be real: drivers go farther! The trick is finding the right disc golf driver for your arm speed. Speaking from experience (and as someone who’s thrown hundreds of different molds and introduced plenty of newbies to the game), I can recommend some top drivers to help boost your distance.

To get maximum distance from a driver, you want to achieve its full flight path. Maximum distance happens when a driver flips over, turns right (increasing forward penetration), and then fades back left, creating an S-curve (for a right-handed backhand throw). In disc golf, distance adds excitement and helps you lower scores, putting you in a winning position.

Understanding Disc Golf Speed Ratings

Years ago, Innova Champion Discs introduced the universal flight ratings system, including four metrics: speed, glide, turn, and fade. Nearly every major disc golf brand now uses this system to help players understand how discs should fly. Though helpful, the system has its flaws. Variations in disc weight, plastic, and even mold runs (like one run being domey and the next flatter) can alter a disc’s flight despite identical ratings.

The first number in the four-digit flight rating—the speed rating—is the most consistent. Oddly, it doesn’t directly measure speed; no speed is clocked, and aerodynamics are rarely considered. Instead, speed is determined by rim width: a 2.0 cm rim is a speed 10, 2.1 cm is speed 11, 2.2 cm is speed 12, 2.3 cm is speed 13, and 2.4 cm is speed 15. The PDGA allows a maximum rim width of 2.5 cm for a standard disc diameter. Most players find rims that wide hard to handle, so a 2.3 cm rim (speed 13) is typically the largest thrown.

Several factors influence a disc’s stability and ability to achieve that full S-curve, including elevation, humidity, temperature, and, most importantly, wind (which can essentially increase or decrease a disc’s effective speed depending on your throwing direction).

Best Speed 13 Disc Golf Drivers for Various Throwing Distances

Less than 200 Feet

Dino Discs Tyrannosaurus
If you can’t throw 200 feet yet, you likely have a slow arm speed. To get a full S-curve flight at this distance, choose an ultra-light driver like Dino Discs, which offers weights as low as 130 grams. The Tyrannosaurus Rex driver, for example, helped my 11-year-old son get his first birdie on a 150-foot hole.

Less than 250 Feet

Divergent Discs Basilisk
The Basilisk is an understable Speed 13 disc designed for players with low arm speed. It’s easy to achieve an S-curve with, but as with most understable drivers, it can turn over if not thrown just right. Though it may lack consistency, it’s a solid choice for players throwing under 250 feet looking for extra distance.

Less than 300 Feet

Divergent Discs Lawin
The Lawin is a more stable version of the Basilisk with great glide and less unpredictability. Low-arm-speed players can get impressive distance with this disc, especially if they throw with a hyzer release. Divergent Discs focuses on beginners and recreational players, so it’s no surprise their high-speed drivers work well for low-arm-speed throwers.

Less than 350 Feet

Infinite Discs Pharaoh
The Pharaoh is my personal favorite—my go-to disc. In lighter weights (160 grams) and I-Blend plastic, I can stretch it close to 400 feet. In heavier weights, it consistently flies 320-350 feet with a slight flip-up turn. Other great options in this range include the Westside King and Destiny.

If you’re already throwing 350 feet or more, there are hundreds of Speed 13 discs that could suit you. At this range, you’ll have the arm speed to handle stable and even overstable distance drivers.

Conclusion

In the end, choosing the right distance driver comes down to matching the disc’s characteristics with your arm speed and throwing style. Speed 13 drivers offer a thrilling combination of distance and control, but the key is to find one that complements your current throwing distance. Whether you’re just breaking 200 feet or reaching out past 350, there’s a disc out there that can add more distance, consistency, and fun to your game. Remember, disc golf is all about enjoying the process, so experiment with different drivers, get a feel for what works best, and keep pushing your limits on the course. After all, nothing beats the satisfaction of watching your disc fly farther than ever before!

Floating disc golf discs are designed to stay afloat in water hazards, providing players with confidence and strategic advantages when playing near water, while also promoting sustainability in the disc golf community. When you’re playing a disc golf course, like the Mulligans course in Marriott Slatersville used for the original Utah’s Open tournament, Floating discs can be very valuable.

Introduction to Floating Disc Golf Discs

Floating disc golf discs represent a significant innovation in the sport, designed to alleviate the frustrations and losses associated with water hazards. By integrating materials or design features that allow these discs to float, manufacturers have provided a lifeline to players who frequently find their discs making unintended dives into lakes and ponds. This unique characteristic not only spares players the expense and disappointment of losing a favorite disc but also encourages more daring plays across water obstacles. Knowing that their disc will float can embolden players to take risks they might otherwise avoid, potentially improving their game and enjoyment.

The range of floating disc golf discs available today is broad, catering to a wide spectrum of needs and preferences. Whether a player is looking for a driver, mid-range, or putter, there’s likely a floating disc that fits the bill. Different plastic types offer varying degrees of grip and durability, while stability levels from overstable to understable can accommodate any throwing style or wind condition. Flight characteristics, which determine how a disc behaves in the air, further allow players to tailor their choice of floating disc. For instance, the Innova Dragon is known for its lightweight design and ability to float, making it an excellent choice for players needing a distance driver that won’t sink on impact with water. This diverse selection ensures that players don’t have to compromise on performance to enjoy the benefits of floating discs.

Characteristics of Floating Discs

aerial view of oceanFloating disc golf discs distinguish themselves through their unique ability to stay afloat on water, a feature that is especially beneficial for courses with water hazards. This buoyancy is accomplished by integrating specific design elements such as air pockets within the disc or employing lighter materials in their construction. These modifications not only ensure that the disc remains visible and retrievable on the water’s surface but also contribute to a distinct flight behavior compared to traditional discs. Players might notice that floating discs can exhibit variations in speed, stability, and glide, necessitating adjustments to their throwing techniques to harness these differences effectively.

Moreover, some floating discs are designed with added functionalities like glow-in-the-dark capabilities, which enhance their visibility under low-light conditions or when partially submerged. This feature is particularly advantageous during dusk or dawn rounds, ensuring that players can easily locate their discs without extensive searching. A notable example includes the AquaFlight Glow DragonFly, which combines the practicality of buoyancy with the convenience of glow-in-the-dark material, making it a popular choice among players who frequently engage in evening or early morning games. These characteristics underscore the innovative approach to disc design, aiming to improve playability and recovery, especially in water hazard scenarios.

Advantages of Using Floating Discs

Floating disc golf discs provide a significant advantage by substantially reducing the fear of water hazards during play. The key benefit is the assurance they offer; knowing that a disc won’t easily sink to the bottom of a pond or lake allows players to approach their shots with greater confidence and boldness. This is especially helpful for those just starting out in the sport or players who have a tendency to release their discs at angles that could potentially lead them into water hazards. For instance, discs like the Innova Dragon are designed to float, making them ideal choices for risky water shots where other discs might be lost. The psychological comfort of using floating discs can lead to improved performance and enjoyment of the game, as players are less inhibited by the fear of losing their equipment.

Additionally, floating discs are emblematic of the disc golf community’s increasing dedication to environmental stewardship. Every disc that ends up at the bottom of a lake or pond contributes to plastic pollution, a concern that floating discs directly address. By remaining buoyant and easily retrievable, these discs help minimize the accumulation of plastic waste in natural water bodies. This not only makes the sport more sustainable but also aligns with broader environmental goals. The Aquarius by Millennium, for example, is not just a high-performance floating disc but also a symbol of the sport’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. As more players choose floating discs for water hazard shots, the collective impact on preserving natural waterways and reducing plastic waste becomes increasingly significant.

How to Choose the Right Floating Disc

Choosing the right floating disc for your disc golf game is a decision that combines personal skill assessment with an understanding of the specific challenges presented by your favorite courses. For players who often face water hazards, floating discs become not just a convenience but a game-changer. It’s essential to evaluate the water hazards you frequently encounter—whether they involve long stretches of water or smaller ponds—and consider how a floating disc can help navigate these challenges. Furthermore, the stability of a disc—categorized as overstable, stable, or understable—is pivotal in matching the disc to your throwing style and power. For example, if you’re someone with a powerful throw, you might lean towards a more stable or overstable disc to ensure it doesn’t veer off course when thrown with force.

Additionally, many leading brands in the sport, such as Innova and Discraft, provide online tools and flight charts that are invaluable resources when selecting a floating disc. These tools can guide players through the selection process by taking into account factors like arm speed, desired flight path, and the disc’s reaction to wind conditions. For instance, Innova’s Dragon and Wahoo are excellent choices for those seeking distance drivers with floating capabilities. The brand’s charts can help you understand how these discs might perform based on your throwing mechanics. Utilizing these resources allows players to make more informed decisions, ensuring that the floating disc they choose will be an asset on the course rather than just another disc in the bag.

Tips for Playing with Floating Discs

Mastering the art of playing with floating disc golf discs requires more than just a general understanding of disc golf mechanics; it demands specific adjustments and practice tailored to the unique properties of these discs. One of the first steps is to spend time getting to know how these discs behave under various conditions. This means taking your floating discs out for practice sessions in different wind conditions and experimenting with throws at various distances. By doing this, you’ll be able to observe how factors like wind direction and force affect the flight path of floating discs, which often have a slightly different aerodynamic profile compared to standard discs due to their buoyant design. This hands-on experience is invaluable for fine-tuning your throwing technique and making informed decisions during gameplay.

Furthermore, the strategic deployment of floating discs can significantly elevate your performance, especially on courses that feature water hazards. The confidence that comes from knowing your disc will float can encourage you to make more aggressive shots across water, potentially shortening your path to the basket. For example, using a disc like the Innova Dragon, known for its excellent buoyancy and distance capabilities, can be a game-changer when facing a daunting water hazard. Beyond navigating water obstacles, floating discs can also be utilized for creative and challenging shots, such as those requiring a disc to gently land and stay on the water’s surface. Incorporating floating discs into your strategy not only adds an exciting dimension to your game but also improves your adaptability and skill set as a player.

Popular Floating Disc Golf Disc Models

The floating disc market has seen a variety of models that have become popular among disc golf players due to their reliability and performance over water hazards. The Aquaflight Osprey is a prime example, celebrated for its ability to maintain a consistent flight path even when thrown over expansive bodies of water. Its buoyant design ensures that it stays afloat, making retrieval from water hazards a breeze. Similarly, the Discmania Mermaid has garnered attention for its dependable floatation characteristics, allowing players to approach water hazards with confidence, knowing their disc won’t sink if it makes an unintended splash.

Another standout in the realm of floating discs is the Yikun Zhu. Not only does it excel in floatation, but it also offers superior durability and grip, making it a top choice for players regardless of their playing environment. Whether it’s a casual round with friends or a high-stakes tournament, the Yikun Zhu provides the performance and reliability players need. This disc’s robust construction also means it can withstand the rigors of frequent play, making it a valuable addition to any disc golfer’s bag. These models exemplify the innovation and specialization that manufacturers are bringing to the floating disc segment, catering to the needs of players who regularly face water hazards on their courses.

Understanding the Physics Behind Floating Discs

The aerodynamics and physics behind floating disc golf discs are both fascinating and fundamental to enhancing a player’s game. The Coanda effect, a critical principle in the flight of these discs, refers to the tendency of a fluid jet (in this case, air) to stay attached to a convex surface, hence aiding in generating lift. This effect is significantly leveraged in the design of floating discs, allowing them to glide smoothly over water hazards by maintaining lift and stability. The unique structural properties of floating discs, such as their specific rim shapes and materials, are tailored to maximize the Coanda effect, thereby optimizing their flight path and performance on the course. This intricate balance of physics not only aids in the disc’s ability to float but also ensures it can be thrown with precision and control.

Furthermore, the spinning motion of a disc golf disc introduces gyroscopic forces, which are pivotal in stabilizing the disc’s flight. These gyroscopic effects prevent the disc from wobbling or turning over in mid-air, allowing for a smoother and more predictable trajectory. This principle is akin to the stability observed in spinning tops or bicycle wheels, where rotation contributes to maintaining an upright and steady motion. For disc golf players, understanding and harnessing these gyroscopic forces can be a game-changer, especially when employing floating discs. Mastery over these forces allows players to execute shots with confidence, knowing their discs have an enhanced ability to hover over water hazards and land precisely where intended. The interplay of the Coanda effect and gyroscopic stability in floating discs exemplifies the importance of physics in sports, offering players a deeper appreciation for the design and functionality of their equipment.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

Opting for floating disc golf discs can significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with playing disc golf, especially in courses that feature water hazards. When discs end up at the bottom of lakes or ponds, they contribute to pollution and can harm aquatic life. By using discs designed to float, players drastically lower the odds of their discs becoming submerged and forgotten, thereby supporting the preservation of natural water bodies. This practice not only benefits the immediate environment by preventing potential pollutants from accumulating but also aligns with the broader goals of sustainability within the disc golf community. As the sport continues to grow, the emphasis on using eco-friendly equipment like floating discs plays a crucial role in promoting responsible play and ensuring that courses remain beautiful and viable for future generations.

Furthermore, the shift towards floating discs reflects a commitment among players and manufacturers to embrace sustainable practices. Many brands now offer floating discs as part of their product lines, recognizing the demand for environmentally friendly options. For instance, the Millennium Aquarius is a popular choice among players who are conscious of both performance and ecological impact. It’s designed for effortless distance while also being buoyant, making it an excellent example of how modern disc technology can accommodate both athletic and environmental considerations. As more players choose floating discs for their water hazard shots, they contribute to a culture of sustainability in disc golf, underscoring the sport’s potential to adapt and evolve in environmentally conscious ways.

Conclusion

Floating disc golf discs have transformed the way players approach water hazards, infusing a newfound level of strategy and peace of mind into the game. The ability to confidently throw over ponds and lakes without the fear of losing a favorite disc encourages bolder plays and can significantly improve a player’s performance on water-heavy courses. Brands such as Innova with their Dragon and Wahoo models, and Millennium with the Aquarius, offer players a spectrum of choices to find the perfect floating disc that matches their playing style and needs.

Moreover, the environmental benefits of using floating discs cannot be overstated. Each disc retrieved from the water is one less piece of plastic pollution affecting our waterways, aligning the sport with broader sustainability and conservation goals. The disc golf community’s embrace of floating discs showcases a commitment to not only improving the game but also to preserving the natural beauty of the courses we love to play on. As players continue to discover and utilize floating discs, this innovative equipment will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of disc golf, making it more enjoyable, accessible, and environmentally responsible.

Okay, you own a disc golf disc or three, played your first round of disc golf, and noticed that there are other players on the course that have huge disc golf bags they are carrying around. Is this necessary? Why do they have so many discs? Do I need a disc golf bag, or can I play disc golf with only one disc?

These are common thoughts and questions for new players.

Need is a strong word, and while you technically can get by without a disc golf bag, once you better learn disc golf, you’ll realize the need to have multiple discs. When you have multiple discs, you need something to carry them.

In addition as you get serious into disc golf you’re going to find your rounds get much longer and you’ll need other essentials like a towel, water bottle, and eventually a rangefinder (yeah really, you’ll want to know exactly how far each hole is so you know which of your many discs to hold).

Why You Should Definitely Get a Disc Golf Bag

Here’s the thing: any disc golf enthusiast worth their salt won’t get far without a trusty disc golf bag. Think of this bag as your behind-the-scenes crew helping you shine on the course. No more frantic disc-searches and mess – everything is neatly tucked away in one spot!

But it’s not just about the neat and tidy factor. A solid disc golf bag also gives your game a significant upper hand. All those little compartments? They provide the perfect system to separate your discs based on features or shot types, making for a streamlined selection process. Before you know it, you’re turning into this pro who effortlessly navigates the course with a bag full of options for every weather condition or layout you face. Talk about convenient!

And let me tell you another reason why these bags are quite a catch – they can carry so much stuff! Most come packing ample storage in terms of pockets, sleeves, and compartments that go beyond just holding discs. Your water bottles, snacks (cause who doesn’t need an energy boost), towels, scorecards, extra clothes – they all get to hitch a ride. And voila! You have everything bundled up for a great round of disc golf.

The best part is that no matter what your budget or style preference is, there’s a perfect disc golf bag for you out there. From compact ones for beginners laying low on casual days to sprawling backpack-style ones for the seasoned players who mean business – every need has been catered to. And honestly, investing in one is smart money because besides protecting your discs, it just gives your playing experience this smooth-as-butter quality.

True Story: Before I had my own dedicated disc golf bag, my discs were this huddled mess at the bottom of my backpack or littering my car’s backseat. I was digging, not playing golf! Buying a proper disc golf bag was quite the gamechanger for me. Discs were organized, and there was room for everything else I needed on the course – water, towels, you name it. Now, I can channel all that energy into enjoying this beautiful game rather than orchestrating lost-and-found missions for my misbehaving discs.

To wrap it up nicely, no understatement here – an organized disc golf bag is like a Swiss Army knife, but for those folks who’d much rather swing discs than blades. Do yourself a favor and get one! You won’t regret it.
